We gather togetherWhere did the holiday season go? It seems that all the festivities and family gatherings, filled with yummy treats and special dishes just flew by! In thinking about the gathering together of friends and families during the holiday season, I reflect on how this community has gathered together in a beautiful spirit of giving. Since the beginning of November, school groups, families, civic clubs, businesses and church groups collected over 50,000 pounds of food to donate to the Georgia Mountain Food Bank. A historic, nothing short of amazing, effort. But these are historic times aren't they? Never before have we seen so many people in need. I am reminded of the number of families served through our food bank network....families who didn't just gather for the holidays, but out of need, live together under one roof all year long now. The sharp knife of these economic times has sliced away savings, homes and jobs, turning lives upside down. Will our spirit of giving last all year long? I'm counting on it...and those children, seniors and families are too. We've pulled together and created something quite amazing here at the Georgia Mountain Food Bank. Over 2 million pounds of food has been distributed through our service area. That means many thousands of meals were put on the tables of families in need this year. And that's because of you....each of you has made a contribution to this great effort. I know you'll be there with us in 2011. 2011 will see the food bank break ground on a new warehouse facility that will mean we can greatly multiply our efforts. The food bank will have the capacity to capture more food and distribute more food. What a positive energy force carrying us into the new year! So thank you for your support of this mission...thank you for rolling up your sleeves and working to close the gap on hunger...no one should be hungry! AND, Happy New Year Friends! I look forward to the continuing the journey with you in 2011. Best, Kay
