2020 Empty Bowl Lunch Thank You

2020’s Virtual Empty Bowl was a little different than in year’s past, but once again you amazed us with your generosity! Thanks to you, the event raised enough money to help provide more than 833,150 meals to those struggling with hunger throughout Hall, Lumpkin, Union, Dawson and Forsyth counties.

This year’s luncheon focused on the collaborative efforts of this community to work together to feed those children, seniors and families who are struggling with food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of your support of GMFB, we were able to meet the overwhelming need with overwhelming love. Your donations, volunteer efforts and collaborative partnerships have helped us reach more people than ever before, and because of you, we were able to join in Feeding Hope to the thousands of neighbors in need in our five-county service area, serving an estimated 52 million meals since 2008, with 1.8 of those from March-June during the height of the pandemic.

If you missed the Virtual Empty Bowl, please check out the program video from our virtual broadcast and check back in for ways to help in the coming months!

As usual, the program also featured the presentation of “The Mike Banks Reflections of the Heart” award in memory of philanthropist and friend of GMFB, Mike Banks of Gainesville. This legacy award is a part of Empty Bowl each year and is given to an individual whose contributions to GMFB truly reflect “the heart of a giver” in the same way that Mike Banks lived his life. This year’s recipient of “The Mike Banks Reflections of the Heart” award was Rodney Greene.

“I couldn’t think of anyone who embodies the spirit of the Mike Banks Reflections of the Heart Award more than Rodney Greene,” stated Kay Blackstock. “Rodney has been a volunteer here almost since the very beginning, for almost 12 years, and his contributions to our programming and mission are truly overwhelming. Just as Mike Banks worked tirelessly on behalf of the Georgia Mountain Food Bank, Rodney is continuing that legacy here.”

Other awards presented were to the Corporate Volunteer of the Year Starbucks and the Individual Volunteer of the Year Award to Steve and Jayne Tanner, whose contributions as members of GMFB’s volunteer squad lovingly called “The A-Team” kept the Food Bank going even amidst a pandemic.
